Wales and Its Boxers: The Fighting Tradition Peter Stead and Gareth Williams

Fighting, brawling, scrapping, wrestling- call it what you will, boxing is as popular as ever in Wales, thanks mainly to Joe Calzaghe's recent success as world champion. This colourful and information-packed volume is the first of its kind to feature all Welsh boxers in one comprehensive study. Any self-respecting sports lover will want this on their bookcase and will marvel at Wales's national heroes, past and present.

In Wales the identification of sport and society has always been central, and in this series of fascinating essays the authors of this book trace how over the decades great fighters have not only reflected but shaped the national mood.

'This is an outstanding collection on a fascinating and neglected topic, vividly written by a distinguished group of historians and informed throughout by a deep knowledge of Welsh culture and history. These essays sparkle as individual pieces whilst also combining to create a compelling account of boxing, masculinity and identity in modern Wales.'

Professor Richard Holt, International Centre for Sports History and Culture, De Montfort University
